It's spooky season, and Matt has been able to prep Jess over the course of many months to watch something a bit scary. For our annual October movie watching traditional, we watched the modern classic Get Out. Jess was ready for scares, and she got them...but not exactly as she fully expected.

Anyone that has seen this one knows that Jess was going to have PLENTY to talk about: racial micro- and macro-aggressions, the use of humour, certified bad times, and why the women in the film might be the most evil. Also, we heap praise upon Rod: the hero the people need. Stir your tea slowly, the sunken place awaits!

Jess and Matt have already seen (and love) All About Eve, the classic Hollywood tale of a woman clawing her way to fame. Our dear friend Ashley, however, had not. Considering that Ashley is a classic film junkie, we were stunned and just had to take the opportunity to have her as our first podcast guest!

This time around, Ashley gets to lead the discussion, and we get into all sorts of topics: the snappy dialogue, the "bad friends", the relation of this story to ones about strippers and aerobics influencers, and *gasp* unmarried women in their 40s. Matt had not seen Spike Lee's Inside Man. Jess had also not seen Inside Man. And thus, the first version of "I Can't Believe WE Haven't Seen..." was born!

Good thing there was lots to talk about, even if neither of us had any idea who would be leading the conversation. Despite this chaotic set-up, we still got to talk about the roles of money and power, post-9/11 America, a very clever screenplay, and the 2006 of it all. Including the flip phones with ringtones. And the iPods with clickwheels. What a time...

Jess had never had the chance to "witness" any of the out-and-out craziness that is Mad Max: Fury Road when it came out in 2015: the wild vehicles, the War Boys, Immortan Joe (who will be referred to by a...*ahem*...different name most of the way through this episode), and the convoy of Max and Furiosa looking to find the Green Place. It goes about as well as you would expect in an Australian post-apocalyptic setting.

We're going to talk about women taking back power, bands suspended on top of big rigs, the "show don't tell" approach in movies, and a whoooooooole lotta weirdness. Also, Jess' "live tweet" style reactions are priceless. So grab a drink, but don't get addicted to the water.

Saved! is a movie Matt had always seen at the video rental stores but had never checked out. Maybe it's because it came out around the same time as Mean Girls (possibly), maybe it's because he didn't know it was supposed to be a satire (maybe), or maybe it's because he was too busy watching pretentious hipster movies (most definitely).

Now that Jess has introduced him to it, they get to talk about Billboard Jesus, Macaulay Culkin's hilarious two-wheeled character turn, how it stacks up to some other films in the teen/satirical movie canon, and the "2004" of it all. Will the Christian Jewels and their Bible tossing win the day?

Jess has seen a couple of the newer James Bond films with Daniel Craig, but never anything starring the original 007, Sean Connery. He's pretty to look at and everything, but in a spy movie made primarily for a male audience interested in spy movies and "being cool" in the 1960's...well, I think you might have an idea how Jess felt about A LOT of this one.

But this just means there is lots to talk about! There's Auric Goldfinger (great name), the arguable best Bond villain of all time, and his stalky Korean henchman Oddjob (even greater name), who may or may not be a fridge. There's the various women (with way more sexist names, mostly) that are not given a lot of agency. And there's Bond, his car, and the only thing he actually fears: a castration laser beam.

Matt read this book way, way, waaayyyyyy back in the day (old man jokes!), this this initial film adaptation from 2005 was never one he sought out. He would probably blame this on fantasy just not being his genre, but Jess isn't high on the genre either and she still watched the film when it came out. Either way, he's out of excuses now!

Grab a handful of the most authentic Turkish Delight you can find (turns out that Big Turk bars are not so authentic...) as Matt and Jess discuss allegories, repressive British society, back hair treasure trails, and how big of a badass Tilda Swinton is. They also ask the question all Canadian viewers will have: "Are all British children just immune to the cold?"

Jess isn't new to Martin Scorsese movies, but Goodfellas had eluded her. This is a bit surprising, given how fascinated she is with true stories AND organized crime, but now she fully understands why you should never tell Joe Pesci that he's a funny guy...
