What happens to human consciousness after a journey around the Moon? It's a question I've wondered about for years — and one I finally got to ask Artemis II astronaut Jeremy Hansen. A few weeks ago, my question to the Artemis II crew about consciousness and the overview effect went viral, with powerful responses from Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover. I caught up with Jeremy on the final episode of the BBC's 13 Minutes podcast and asked him about Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, whose own journey around the Moon led him to spend the rest of his life studying human consciousness. As the daughter of two NASA astronauts, I've often wondered whether seeing Earth from space reveals something the rest of us can never fully understand. Jeremy's answer challenged that assumption in a way I never expected. It also connects to a core idea in the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism: that the sacred isn't somewhere you have to go.
