Professor Melissa Baysari is chatting with Professor Tarcisio Saurin a Full Professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering, and has been a visiting professor at Griffith University, Macquarie University, and the University of Salford. His main research interests include resilience engineering, work system design, safety management, and lean production. He has conducted research and consulting projects on these topics in healthcare, construction, electricity distribution, aviation, and manufacturing. He also serves as an associate editor of the Safety Science journal, and as a member of the executive committee of the Resilient Health Care Society. Since 2019, he has been listed annually among the top 2% most cited authors in human factors and ergonomics. He is the recipient of the 2025 International Ergonomics Association/Elsevier John Wilson Triennial Award for contributions to complexity management and designing for resilient performance.

William S. Marras, Ph.D., CPE chats to Sharon Todd about his reseach into back injuries and muscle co-activation.

William S. Marras Ph.D., CPE is the Distinguished University Professor and holds the Honda Endowed Chair in Integrated Systems Engineering, at the Ohio State University. He serves as the Director of the Spine Research Institute at the Ohio State University where he leads NIH, NSF, DoD, Ohio BWC and privately funded research eGorts. Dr. Marras also holds joint academic appointments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

His research is focused on understanding multidimensional causal pathways for spine disorders through quantitative epidemiologic evaluations, laboratory biomechanical studies, personalized mathematical modeling, and clinical studies of the lumbar and cervical spines. His findings have been published in over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, hundreds of refereed proceedings, and numerous books and book chapters including a book entitled The Working Back: A Systems View. Professor Marras has been active in the National Research Council (NRC) having served on over a dozen boards and committees and has served as Chair of the Board on Human Systems Integration for multiple terms. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief of Human Factors is currently Deputy Editor of Spine and has served as the President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Dr. Marras holds Fellow status in six professional societies and is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine), recorded a TEDx talk entitled “Back Pain and your Brain” and has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.

Sharon Todd (CPE) is discussing "Driver Distraction" with Emeritus Professor Michael (Mike) Regan.

Emeritus Professor Michael (Mike) Regan, is an Emeritus Professor with the Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation (rCITI) at the University of UNSW, Sydney. Prior to that he was Professor of Human Factors at rCITI, and before that Chief Scientist-Human Factors at the Australian Road Research Board.

Mike has BSc (Hons) and PhD degrees in Psychology and Human Factors from the Australian National University and nearly 30 years’ experience in transport human factors and road safety research - in Australia, Europe and the US.

His key research interests include driver distraction and inattention, road user behaviour, human factors in road design and traffic engineering, vehicle human-machine interface design, and human interaction with intelligent transport systems. He is the author/co-author of around 200 peer-reviewed research documents, including 5 books, two of which are on driver distraction and inattention.

Mike has done much to help society, globally, to prevent and mitigate the effects of driver distraction: through his research; his contributions to international committees; his advice to governments and industry; as an expert witness in courts; and in the recent provision of technical input into the development of Australia’s new technology-neutral road rules for driver distraction and Australia’s National Driver Distraction Roadmap.

Mike is the co-founder and co-organiser of the biennial International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, to be held this year for the 10th time in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Road Safety and a long-standing Member (and 25th President) of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia.
