- The painting measured roughly 24 by 36 inches and was rolled at one corner, wrapped in a painter’s drop cloth.
- A red wax seal was pressed into the lower right edge - the kind museums use to mark permanent collection items.
- The alarm log showed a valid six-digit code entry at 2:17 a.m. the Monday before the painting was found, with no forced entry or triggered sensors.
- The alarm code had been changed in July 2019 and was derived from the answer to a crossword clue in the director’s June puzzle book, left on her desk in plain view.
- Patrick Grubb, the Aldermoor conservator, reported the forgery used period-appropriate linen and paint consistent with Doris Wendt’s 1940s-1950s materials and confident brushwork.
