We stand before a simple tombstone from St. John Paul II’s burial and let it confront our love of status, accomplishments, and control. We measure a Christian life by what we do with what we’ve received, and by whether someone comes closer to Jesus because we lived.
• the tombstone as a blunt reminder of humility and mortality
• Saint Paul’s question about gifts we have received
• shifting from admiring John Paul II to letting his life question ours
• gifts that become sainthood only when given back to God
• the Gospel warning about rules that push out the Giver
