What story are we telling ourselves about life? That question sits at the heart of this exploration of Psalm 23:5, and it cuts right to the core of how we navigate our daily experience. The session opens with a striking contrast: the familiar, comforting words of Psalm 23 set alongside an 'anti-Psalm' that captures what life feels like when we believe we are our own shepherd. That anti-Psalm is uncomfortably relatable -- the restlessness, the distrust, the sense that our cup is never quite full enough. But Psalm 23:5 offers a radically different vision. God prepares a table before us, anoints us with oil, and causes our cup to overflow -- and He does all of this in the very presence of our enemies. The threats do not disappear. The enemies are still watching. But they cannot touch us, and that changes everything about how we carry ourselves through a world full of danger and uncertainty.

When life feels dark, confusing, or painful, it can be easy to wonder if God has failed us or forgotten us. In this message from Psalm 23:4, we’re reminded that the Shepherd’s presence is our confidence in the valley — and that even there, He is leading, protecting, correcting, and forming us. What does it actually mean to have our souls restored? Psalm 23:3 offers us two profound phrases that carry far more weight than we might initially realize. Digging into the original Hebrew, the word translated as 'refreshes' or 'restores' carries the core meaning of 'to return' — and that single shift in understanding opens up something remarkable. Through the lens of shepherding, we discover a phenomenon called a 'cast' sheep: an animal that has simply leaned too far to one side, lost its center of gravity, and ended up helplessly on its back, unable to right itself. Left that way, it will die — either from internal pressure on its lungs and heart, or from the predators that find it completely vulnerable. The parallel to our own spiritual lives is striking. We do not always end up spiritually upended through dramatic rebellion. Sometimes it is a slow lean — distance from God, disconnection from community, the quiet pull of sin, a season of sorrow or mental exhaustion — and then one small event tips us over. The question is not whether it will happen, but what we do when it does. The answer is simpler and more humbling than any religious checklist: we call out to the Shepherd. He is already on his way. This is the kind of soul restoration that Psalm 23 is pointing us toward — not self-repair, but surrender to the One who can right us with a single movement.
