Ritchie was stationed at Camp Barkeley, Texas, when pneumonia overwhelmed him. On the night of December 20, a young doctor pronounced him dead, and his body was taken to the morgue. At 3:15 in the morning, Ritchie's heart stopped. At 3:24, against all odds, he was revived with a stimulant injection directly into his heart. In those nine minutes, he traveled further than any human being had ever documented.
