- He cached supplies at Fenner Creek (mile 41) in late October and left four ounces of partially unrolled athletic tape in the canister.
- At about mile 62 on the night of December 8 he struck a granite shelf and suffered a deep laceration below his right kneecap.
- He improvised a tourniquet by cutting off a compression sleeve, torquing a trekking pole through the sleeve, and bracing it for 22 minutes in 11°F temperatures.
- He walked about thirteen hours in the dark and wind gusts over 50 mph before being found alive in a cabin at 7:15 AM on December 9; the bent pole was visible in the doorway.
