This weekend on Habanos Saturday EP 945, we step back from the hype and take an honest, informed look at where Cuban cigars have been, where they are now, and where the cigar world is heading over the next 30 years.
We begin with the roots. The Habanos Festival, founded in 1999, was created to celebrate Cuban cigar heritage, showcase new releases, and bring together growers, rollers, collectors, and distributors from around the world. For years, it set the global agenda for premium cigars. At the same time, Cohiba, born in 1966 as a private cigar for Fidel Castro and foreign dignitaries, evolved from a state secret into the most recognized cigar brand on earth—built on scarcity, mythology, and political symbolism as much as tobacco.
But today, that world is changing.
We’ll talk openly about the politics surrounding Habanos, the growing geopolitical instability, and why many long-time aficionados, retailers, and collectors are canceling attendance or opting out of the festival entirely. We’ll examine how sanctions, global conflict, inflation, and supply-chain stress are driving price inflation, shrinking availability, and pushing Cuban cigars into a category that fewer people can—or want to—participate in.
From there, we zoom out.
What happens when Cuban cigars become inaccessible to the next generation? What role will non-Cuban cigars play as consistency, pricing, and transparency improve outside of Cuba? Are we heading toward a global cigar shortage, or simply a market correction driven by overpricing and speculative hype?
Most importantly, we ask the question no one wants to answer:
Are cigars becoming victims of politics rather than beneficiaries of culture?
This is not a sales pitch. It’s not nostalgia. It’s a real conversation about cigars, power, economics, and taste—where the past collides with the future.
This is the show insiders watch, skeptics respect, and newcomers need—because cigar culture doesn’t survive on myth alone.
Not your grandfather’s cigar show — but he'd probably still love it.
