From the very beginning, God's covenant with humanity was never about rules. It was about faith. When Abraham believed God, that belief was credited to him as righteousness — not his adherence to a law, because the law didn't exist yet. It came 430 years later. Paul's argument in Galatians 3 is that the law never replaced the original covenant of faith — it supplemented it. It came into existence because of transgressions, because people kept making decisions that drove their lives off a cliff, and God knew they needed something to keep them from the edge.
Think of a guardrail. Nobody builds a guardrail in the ocean or in the river you'd fall into. They build it in the safe zone — the place where you can make contact and be redirected before it's too late. That's what the law was for. Not to make you righteous — only Jesus can do that. But to keep you from blowing your life apart before you even understand what's at stake.
This is the foundation for what Paul calls a personal code of honor — not a list of rules imposed from outside, but guardrails you build in the safe zones of your life before the dangerous curves arrive. Life disasters don't announce themselves. Nobody wakes up and decides to ruin their marriage, their finances, or their career. They make one small decision that doesn't seem like a big deal — and then it cascades. The time to think about guardrails is before you're already in the air.
