As Christians, it is easy to fall into the mentality that growing in maturity as a Christian means I must somehow go out and obtain the qualities and attitudes I lack. This morning, God’s Word shares with us a rather stunning realization. The Bible teaches that Christians mature as we come to a greater realization of what we already have in Christ. The gospel transforms us not because it’s a message about internal transformation but rather Christ’s substitution, who has done for us and secured for us what we could never secure for ourselves. So, the hard work of Christian growth is this: to think less about ourselves, and more of Jesus and his performance for us.
