As part of our International Youth Day campaign, we set out to find a young social entrepreneur who had used repayable finance to grow their impact, and we were lucky to meet Julia Strelczuk, founder of Nettle Café.

With support from social investment in the form of a repayable grant, Julia was able to transform the old bank in Port Sunlight into the next home for her cafe, hire staff, and boost cashflow to get the business up and running. The results have been remarkable, and in just one month at the new location, she’s earned what used to take a whole year at the old one!

Pat McCarthy is Chief Executive Officer of Better Lives, an organisation based in Knowsley, Liverpool, which is working towards a society that respects and values older people. They took on social investment from Kindred in 2021. She has over 20 years in experience of working to support older people and is particularly passionate about fairness and social justice, and the role this plays in ensuring people are able to remain in control of their lives.

Patricia is an advisor, impact investor and philanthropist. After 20 years in investment banking and financial communications, Patricia now wears many hats, including running her consultancy Integriti Capital, as well as her work as a co-founder of Extend Ventures, increasing access to funding for diverse start-ups and small businesses. In addition, Patricia is a proud co-funder of the Black Funding Network and GiveBLACK, a Non-Executive Director of Social Enterprise UK and a member of Women in Social Finance.
