Zechariah is maybe the most Jesus-focused book in the whole Old Testament. There were times while we were studying this book that I even forgot it was Old Testament. That’s how future-focused it is.

And today, we’re gonna wrap it all up. So my plan for today is to recap what we’ve studied in this book, with a particular emphasis on Jesus. Let’s highlight all the places that spoke about Jesus’ first AND second comings.

And after that, we’ll take a look at the last six verses of chapter 14.

And then: we’ll talk about which book we could study next—and give you a chance to weigh in on whether you’d even like to the podcast to continue at all.

You’re probably familiar with this story from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry:

Luke 4:16-20

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

And then it says this

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

Very familiar story for a lot of us who have read the gospels. Made a lot of people unhappy, but it was a very positive message: the first time Jesus came, as you know, His purpose was to set people free. Free from the devil, free from their sicknesses, free from their sin.

But did you know he didn’t finish His sentence? He pulled open the book of Isaiah, started reading at chapter 61, and He stopped at a comma. Let’s go look at the original words.

Isaiah 61, starting at verse 1

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,

And that’s where Jesus stopped reading, but here’s what came next in the original passage:

and the day of vengeance of our God

That was the part He left out. And why? Because that wasn’t His mission in His first coming. The Day of Vengeance of Our God would be reserved for His Second Coming.

Last week, we covered what needs to happen before Jesus returns.

The Jewish people must look on Him whom they pierced and mourn.

Once you understand that, you understand this demonic hatred of the Jewish people. Now you understand the spirit behind antisemitism. Now you understand why there was a holocaust.

But I have some really unpleasant news to share today from Bible prophecy: Zechariah 13 tells us there will be another. Another holocaust.

And … it will be twice as bad as the first one.
