When a church gets shaken, the hardest question isn’t about programs or preferences. It’s the gut-level one: what can actually hold us together after disappointment, division, dishonesty, betrayal, or real harm? We sit with that reality and turn to 1 John, written to a community dealing with departures, competing claims, and the ache of staying when trust has been wounded.

We start where John starts: not with our failure, but with God’s character. “God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.” That single line reframes everything about Christian faith, church conflict, and church hurt. Light reveals what’s real, guides the way forward, and brings life. Darkness doesn’t create reality, but it scrambles our ability to see clearly, and it tempts us to remake God into a reflection of our wounds, our politics, or the loudest voices around us.

We also talk honestly about what happens after harm: it’s easy to project the church’s darkness onto God and assume he’s hypocritical, manipulative, or part of a cover-up. John’s invitation is both bracing and kind: stop hiding. Christian community isn’t a place where no one has darkness; it’s a people learning to walk in the light because we trust the God who is light.

We end with a simple practice you can try this week: “God, where am I hiding?” Then we name concrete next steps with resentment, fear, numbness, and confession. If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more people looking for healing and clarity can find it.
