  • Time Capsule: The 1946 Army vs. Notre Dame Game
    2026/08/06

Gridiron America is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.

    EPISODE SUMMARY

In this episode, we time travel back to November 9, 1946, in the first of our planned public domain Gridiron America time capsule episodes, and put the listener in front of their AM radio as number one ranked Army battles number two ranked Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium, in front of a packed house of 74,121.

Going into this match up, both teams were undefeated, and averaged over 30 points a game going into the game. Army had a 25-game winning streak, last losing to Notre Dame in 1943 (26–0), but had won the last two contests between the schools by scores of 59–0 and 48–0. Army had the defending Heisman Trophy winner, Doc Blanchard, also known as "Mr. Inside", the man who would win it that year, Glenn Davis, also known as "Mr. Outside", and one of the nation's top quarterbacks in Arnold Tucker.

Notre Dame had the quarterback who would win the Heisman the next year, Johnny Lujack, and end Leon Hart of Notre Dame won the Heisman in 1949 (the only time ever that a college football game had four Heisman Trophy winners). Lujack, along with several other teammates and coach Frank Leahy, had returned to the team for the 1946 season after serving in World War II. Both Tucker and Lujack were also outstanding defensive backs at a time when football players, college as well as professional, usually played both offense and defense.

Gridiron America Radio is dedicated to both current and historical American football talk, including the “what if” questions that all sports fans ask and try to answer with the help of statistics, math and computer modeling provided by SportsMaster Simulation Games www.SportsMaster-Simulation.games. • The Odyssey of Gridiron Football in Japan
    2026/07/22

Gridiron America Radio is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.

    EPISODE SUMMARY

From the Gridiron Japan Radio archives comes a replay of The Football Odyssey's excellent history lesson, narrated by Aaron Harris, on the history of American football in Japan. Which begs the question, when might Gridiron Japan ever return to the airwaves? Honestly, we don't know. Possibly in a mini segment, but since right now here at Gridiron America Radio (which owns the rights to Gridiron Japan), we don’t have a dedicated team within Japan to cover the game. Therefore, we’d just like to share with you the inspiration that prompted us to create that podcast, which at the time was the only English show that exclusively covered the gridiron game in Japan.

Aron Harris is one of the best football podcasters in the business as he approaches his interviews and episodes as if they were an NFL Films short film or NPR segment, which is what he did for this, one of his first episodes, in 2021. In sum, the Football Odyssey is a human interest podcast that covers the beautiful sport that is, American football. • Happy Canada Day! CFL Week 4
    2026/06/29

Gridiron America Radio is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.

    EPISODE SUMMARY

We start the early celebration of Canada Day, which is on July 1, with a look back at Week 4 of the CFL, and then look back at the CFL/XFL war of words five years ago. Why look back? Because five years ago the pandemic put the CFL on life support and many XFL supporters in America, who had no clue about the league, were claiming that the only way for the CFL to survive was to merge with the (now defunct) third version of the XFL.
