To be a disciple of Jesus means to learn from Jesus. But before we can understand what a disciple of Jesus does, we must first understand how it is that we become a disciple of Jesus. It’s not through self-improvement; it’s not by moral effort; it’s not through sincerity. Apart from the Spirit’s work we are dead in our sins and in need of life. Through the Spirit who works through the Word of God, those who once were dead are brought to life to be children of the one true God. Just as God raised up a vast, living army from dry bones, God continues to breathe new life and new hope into his church through his Word and sacraments.
