  • Carrying Freedom forwards
    2026/08/31

Freedom Trail is still open with tours bringing a fresh way to ride the trail.

In this episode, we look back on the racing season that it was; the rides, the challenges, the characters, the incredible support from our communities and the moments that reminded us why this trail is so special.

We also celebrate the generosity of the Freedom Trail family and the fundraising that has grown around the event, helping to support the people and places that make the journey possible.

But most of all, this is a chance to reflect on what we take home with us. The trail has a habit of changing our perspective: teaching us about resilience, generosity, connection, simplicity and the joy of being fully present.

As we close out the racing season, we explore how we can hold onto those lessons; and allow the benefits of the trail to ripple into our everyday lives, our families and our communities.

Because the Freedom Trail isn't only about getting to the finish. It's about what happens to us along the way, and what we choose to carry forward.

  • Why We Keep Coming Back | Craig Bosenberg on the Freedom Challenge
    2026/07/23

In this episode of the Freedom Trail Podcast, three-time Freedom Challenge finisher Craig Bosenberg shares an honest and thought-provoking reflection on what keeps bringing riders back to one of South Africa's toughest bikepacking and endurance mountain biking adventures.

Craig explains why the real challenge extends far beyond the kilometres. While the Freedom Challenge showcases some of South Africa's most spectacular remote landscapes, unforgettable sunrises and iconic river crossings, he believes the greatest test is mental. It's about resilience, adapting to the unexpected, pushing beyond perceived limits, and discovering what you're truly capable of when there's no option but to keep moving forward.

The conversation also celebrates the unique Freedom community. From the warmth of support station hosts to the friendships formed on the trail, Craig describes the event as a reminder of the very best of humanity. Away from phones, emails and social media, riders experience a rare opportunity to disconnect from modern life and reconnect with nature, themselves and the simple purpose of travelling from one point to the next.

Whether you're planning your first Freedom Challenge, are an experienced bikepacker, or simply love stories of adventure, endurance and personal growth, Craig's reflections perfectly capture why this iconic South African mountain biking event leaves such a lasting mark on everyone who rides it.

Topics covered: Freedom Challenge, bikepacking, endurance cycling, mountain biking, South Africa, mental resilience, adventure cycling, self-discovery, trail community, support stations and life lessons from the trail.

  • Tim Deane reflects on his winning ride of Freedom with Steve Burnett
    2026/07/08

In this episode of the Freedom Trail Podcast, Steve Burnett sits down with 2026 Freedom Challenge winner Tim Deane to unpack the highs and lows, his preparation and experience on the trail.

Tim takes us behind the scenes of his winning race, sharing the countless decisions that ultimately led him to the finish line first. From race strategy and night time navigation to managing fatigue, and weather.

"It really is such a special experience and such a wonderful personal challenge. It's shared with such a strong community as well. There's a brotherhood and a sisterhood here that appreciate how hard it is for everybody to do this. It's special, but it's also damn hard. And whether or not you make it through to the finish, whether you have to pull out, amazing to see John Bowen after his seventh attempt being successful. Everybody's rooting for him. Everybody's sad for somebody who has to pull out for whatever reason. And we know they've gutted it out to that point. And eventually sometimes it's just too much. But we all appreciate what a beautiful but challenging endeavor this is, and that's why there's such a strong sense of community around it." Tim Deane
