  • Episode 019: Thoughts on Game Show History and Culture, a Tribute to Bob Barker, and a Review of "Perfect People"
    2023/11/03

Today Frank discusses what kind of general character he believes he could play well in any kind of production, then discusses a little about game show history and culture over many years. He asks questions like what happened to most of the morning game shows and why many are now on only at night and feel "darker".

He then gets in to a belated tribute to Bob Barker, the long-time host of The Price is Right who died recently at age 99. He credits Bob with "making" that show with his charm and sense of humor, and then Frank then envisions what his own success might look like in the arts non-monetarily.

Finally he does a review of Perfect People, a 1988 made-for-TV movie with PB and some other familiar names. It tackles the constant pursuit of health and a fountain of youth in western societies, when many people already have much more going for them than they might otherwise realize. So it has a terrific message in addition to its humor.

Perfect People is currently available on Amazon Prime Video as well as FreeVee, Tubi, and YouTube.

  • Episode 018: Stories of Intuition and Its Importance, Then "Starsky and Hutch", and a Quick Comment on Red Left Turn Arrows
    2023/10/27

On this week's episode, Frank gets in to a somewhat deep discussion on intuition which may be in shorter supply in today's world. Combined with experience and its active development, it can help with discernment especially with another presidential election coming up in 2024. Frank gives several stories of his gut feelings over the years.

The Priscilla Barnes review is from her appearance on the classic detective show Starsky and Hutch in 1978, appropriately titled "Foxy Lady". While he thinks the series is okay, this particular episode was well-written and acted with the most suspense about Priscilla's character's specific role. Definitely worth a watch.

Lastly he gets in to a brief discussion of the somewhat recent "phenomenon" of red light left turn arrows and how he disagrees with his podcasting influence on this, in part because this is "new" in the past 20-25 years and it was never clear how to approach it. Probably should have mentioned the blinking yellow left turn arrows, on which you can cautiously turn left.

Starsky and Hutch is currently available on Amazon Prime or though DVD/Blu-Ray.

  • Episode 016: Paying Tribute to a Friend from College and a Review of "The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch"
    2023/10/13

Frank has a heavy heart this week because an old friend from Texas Tech, Jay Leeson, passed away last week at the age of 44. While he had lost touch with Jay, he summarizes Jay's life as a journalist in several different forms across Lubbock and West Texas, and tells some funny stories from their time in college.

Then Frank reviews The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch, a made for TV movie from 1982 for which Priscilla Barnes received top billing. It is typical Aaron Spelling fare--a comedy, romance, and western with the American Civil War as a backdrop. It is full of melodrama and multiple plots. Definitely worth a look.

The Wild Women of Chastity Gulch is available on YouTube.

  • Episode 015: Trying Out The Ask Me Anything Segment
    2023/10/06

On this week's episode, Frank pilots the segment Ask Me Anything that he has been dying to do. He answers questions on professional wrestling, women's golf and the LPGA, 2023 Texas Tech Football, and what he thinks Priscilla Barnes is doing now especially in light of the writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood. He emphasizes that being a fan gives him a right to an opinion, which sometimes means criticism. He extends this same right to his fans too and looks forward to hearing from you!

  • Episode 014: Shopping on Gamedays and Town Comparisons, A Traffic Pet Peeve, "The Love Boat" (First Appearance)
    2023/09/29

On this show, Frank talks about shopping on football gamedays with his wife while he would rather be on campus all day partying. Then he goes in to differences between shopping in Lubbock vs. Amarillo, and discusses which one is better and speculates the how and the why it got this way. He then talks about a non-accident in traffic, which is still very much a pet peeve of his these days.

Finally he reviews the popular classic "sitcom" The Love Boat with Priscilla Barnes' first appearance on the show in a plot called "Winner Take Love" from early 1978. He mentions that the show is tricky to review with its long history, charm, and three plots per episode, not to mention its iconic permanent cast and loads of recognizable guest stars. Who can forget the song either? In the end it is always satisfying TV viewing.

The Love Boat is available on Paramount +, Pluto TV, and Blu-Ray/DVD.

  • Episode 013: This Show's Niche, The Tarleton State Halftime Show, and "The Last Married Couple in America"
    2023/09/22

Today Frank welcomes everyone back to the show after brainstorming where to take its future. He begins by talking about its niche, an important concept to set the show apart from others, yet a limiting one for his vision. He contends that his niche is in talking about "obscure" topics that few are talking about and which typically have a lot of nuance.

He goes in to an example from college football, which may be destined for trouble on the horizon. Emphasizing that there are many subtopics under that to discuss, he has observed fewer and fewer visiting bands doing halftime shows at Texas Tech (and elsewhere)--until this last game against Tarleton State. It's a small thing for sure, but an important tradition on Saturdays that may be disappearing along with others.

Finally, Frank reviews The Last Married Couple in America, a time-specific comedy from 1980 about marriage and relationships. It has a great title, song, and cast (including Priscilla Barnes). He sees it as a fair movie with funny parts, but understands why fans and critics dislike it still today.

The Last Married Couple in America is available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

  • Episode 012: Podcast Feedback and Topics, Then a Review of "The Seniors"
    2023/09/01

In this week's episode, Frank talks some about the podcast's status while asking for your feedback as well as suggestions. In particular, he was having some trouble coming up with a good pre-topic this week prior to doing the review. Then he talks about two minor topics before mentioning some things he's looking at doing to improve the show.

This week's Priscilla Barnes review is from a movie early in her career called The Seniors. She plays a quiet nymph named Sylvia while four college guys conduct a sex experiment (but not with her). He goes in to some detail about the time it was made and what was going on then, where it was filmed, as well as actors, plot, and observations of the non-so-good film.

The theme song is called Retro Funk by SoulProdMusic and can be found at pixabay.com.

The Seniors is available for streaming on Tubi, and can also be viewed on Blu-Ray and DVD.
