When wildfires swept through northern Saskatchewan in 2025, officials ordered residents to leave. In this episode, meet the people who defied evacuation orders north of La Ronge for more than a week, forking out $39,000 for equipment to confront a wall of flames on their own. CBC producer Janani Whitfield travelled to Wadin Bay to understand the difficult decisions neighbours make when fire threatens their homes.
Saskatchewan’s wildfire response last summer was “inadequate” with “significant gaps”, according to an independent audit released June 12, 2026. A week later, Wadin Bay became the first fire-ravaged community to receive a provincial grant of $40,000 to compensate residents.
