Many who claim not to fear death in fact betray a deeper and unhealthy dread of it, often masked by denial, silence, or frantic activity, and this fear is usually rooted in a prior fear of life itself. Scripture rightly calls death “the last enemy,” one conquered in Christ but still feared when life has been lived evasively and irresponsibly before God. Those who shrink from the duties, joys, sorrows, and obedience of life are seldom prepared to face death with peace, whereas those who live victoriously in Christ commonly die with quiet confidence and even joy. The remedy for fear of death, therefore, is not bravado or denial but humility: an honest confession of fear, sin, and weakness before God, and a life surrendered to Him in faith. When a man learns to receive life from God’s hand in joy and sorrow, strength and weakness he also learns to face death without terror, knowing that the bond of love in Jesus Christ is unbreakable. Thus, being unafraid of life in Christ, he becomes unafraid of death, able to say with Paul, “Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57)
