This is one of Scotland's great feats of human patience and intention. Authorised by Parliament in 1768, the canal took more than twenty years to complete, interrupted by arguments, failed contractors, and an empty treasury. Engineers came and went — John Smeaton designed it, stepped away, returned, and eventually handed the unfinished work to Robert Whitworth, who finally saw it through. On the twenty-eighth of July 1790, a hogshead of water from the Forth was tipped into the Clyde at Bowling, and the canal was done.
Frank walks you through its locks and levels — twenty locks rising to the summit, nineteen falling to the Clyde — past Kilsyth, Kirkintilloch, and Bishopbriggs, and along the ancient line of the Antonine Wall, the old Roman boundary that once marked the very edge of the known world. He tells of the passenger boats that carried forty-four thousand people in a single year, and the small, quiet negotiations that brought a branch line to Glasgow's merchants.
Spoken slowly, calmly, and without urgency — this is a sleep story for those who find rest in history, water, and gentle places. Let Frank's voice carry you away. A calming episode to help you relax and fall asleep.
