Here’s the gist, human. God gives us prompts for spiritual direction and learning. This one came from a new sister in Christ. A powerful beacon of the faith that comes before. A prompt to spend time on what it means to be “more than a conqueror” and what my identity in Christ means to me right now. It’s perfect timing, don’t you think, as we celebrate the day Jesus came to live among us? How does our identity in Christ help us navigate our personality, people and the path we are on? I share mine to prompt you to think about how you would describe your identity in Christ, this year, this Christmas. Because it started in a manger.

Here’s the gist, human. Jesus is enough. He lived all the life we need to give ours. In the middle of this season make him enough. Settle in to why he came, how he walked, and what he did that is the only gift any human needs. Read through the gospel of Matthew to prepare your heart for this giving season. I am asking us to do this because this is the season that always wants more of everything. It beckons us to buy one more gift, bake one more batch, complete one more project, more wanting, needing, stressing, all kinds of things that shortchange us from loving others with spiritual gifts money cannot buy, deeds cannot complete, and human nature cannot redeem. Let’s give what has been given to us. Here’s the gist, human. I prompted us to make a list of Red Sea moments when the water walls were held up by God. Let’s consider Moses, God and the Red Sea first. The epic exodus. And the Red Sea process we can expect when God fights for us to gain his glory. These moments, experiences, seasons are such an honor, human. An honor to be able to see the water walls as we walk, to see what God is containing, the horses, the chariots behind us being submerged by his hand.

I have two Red Sea affirmations.

Affirmation #1: When I am confused, and I want to turn back; when I am terrified, doubtful, confused, frustrated, I continue to walk through his parted waters.

Affirmation #2: Whatever he delivers me to, makes me stay in, pulls me out of; however I depend on him, how I call for him, how I rest in him, will be for one purpose—that he gain glory for himself in the eyes of believers and nonbelievers.

Here’s the gist, human. When I am blind to my intent, Jesus helps me see my motivation through his eyes. When I am paralyzed by a problem, he moves me to my next step. When I accumulate earthly scabs from being “in the world” he purifies my inner skin. When I turn away from his voice, he whooshes divinity deep into my ear. When I am thrown down by my human nature, he raises my spirit. Blind, lame, infected, deaf, and dead. That’s me. But God gave me the gift of reconciliation through his Son. And now, I (and all believers) have this gift we can tell others about. It starts with our gratitude that we can see, walk, heal, hear and live eternally. We can do what Jesus tells us to do, “report to others what we hear and see” our Savior doing in our lives.

Why? So another human can be reconciled to God. E164. Thanks for listening.

Here’s the gist, human. Misrepresenting Jesus is to posture about his persona instead of emulating his power. We have a choice: to reflect Jesus, or to mispresent him. God grants believers the gift of suffering for Christ. It is not a consequence of sin. That’s how I see it. It is a consequence of being a believer. Paul tells us that believing and suffering are gifts from God. The Holy Spirit is not with us to comfort us by never challenging us. He is with me; He is with you to comfort us in the struggle. I think it is a struggling toward, a suffering toward relationships that stand firm in one Spirit. And proof to adversaries that they are condemned by their behavior.

True or False: You can imagine what God has prepared for you.

Here’s the gist, human. What do you imagine God has prepared for you? Moses lived a hard-fought testimony and died in the arms of God. (or so I envision it). Today we consider obedience gone rogue, two strikes on a rock and a God who represents his holiness. We explore a shepherd’s mental path: Forget not. Accept. Trust. We climb Mount Nebo to see how Moses left this earth. An obedient servant. With a distant view of the Promised Land alongside the God he served. It breaks my heart in all the right places.

Here’s the gist, human. Consider a word that cuts to the bone for so many humans. Sacrifice. And this. God first sacrifices a Son (John 3:16) to give us a King. Jesus sacrifices his life to give humanity eternal life. Humanity, every human can sacrifice a life of earthly gain, the human gain of things, to live in the redeeming praise of His victory. It takes the fruit of our lips. That’s how praise works. It’s the stuff meant for kings. It’s the spiritual business of having a Savior who is Lord of your life. The eternal King.

And the better we know Him, the deeper the praise. The louder. The longest. The only.
