Liberty is truth-dependent. A people cannot meaningfully consent, govern, or defend themselves inside a falsified reality. Self-evident truths do not maintain themselves. Once established, the first price of liberty is paid continuously — through fidelity to truth, disciplined self-government, responsible citizenship, readiness, service, restraint, and stewardship.

Sweat

When that price is deferred, corrupted, or refused, the debt does not disappear. It compounds until liberty is taken from without, surrendered from within, or defended often, and historically always, at the cost of human life.
