On January 13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman left her grandparents' house in Arlington, Texas, on her bicycle at 3:10 p.m. Eight minutes later, a neighbor watched a man in a black pickup truck grab her off the bike in an abandoned grocery store parking lot and drive away. Four days later she was found in a creek, and investigators concluded she had been kept alive for two days while the whole city searched. Her killer has never been identified. Yet her name is on every phone in the country: the AMBER Alert, credited with rescuing more than 1,100 abducted children, was born from her case, after one Dallas-Fort Worth radio listener asked a simple question: we have alerts for tornadoes, why not for abducted children?
