    Le statistiche relative a questa progressione evidenziano una crisi nascosta: i caregiver (o assistenti familiari) dedicano in media 31 ore settimanali all'assistenza non retribuita, assumendosi a tutti gli effetti un secondo lavoro a tempo pieno. Nelle fasi avanzate, il 50% dei caregiver intervistati riferisce di fornire oltre 100 ore di assistenza alla settimana. Il costo socioeconomico e fisico è immenso: il 15% dei caregiver è costretto a lasciare completamente il proprio lavoro, il 74,6% sperimenta una stanchezza eccessiva e il 60,5% soffre di una cronica mancanza di sonno.
