In Thread’s penultimate episode on the Gospel of John, hosts Dr. David Pocta and Hannah DeSouza welcome back PhD candidate Jake Ostrowski to explore John 15–17 and the question of how disciples remain connected to Jesus after his departure. They unpack “abide” (menō) as a reciprocal, relational “with-ness” made possible by the Holy Spirit, discuss the vine-and-branches image and pruning as removal of what blocks Jesus’ life flowing through believers, and identify fruit as joy amid hardship, love within the community, and inviting others to know Jesus. Jake describes abiding as a daily practice informed by Jesus’ relationship with the Father and examples like Brother Lawrence’s “practice of the presence of God.” In John 16 they emphasize the Spirit as constant companion, and in John 17 they discuss eternal life as knowing God and Jesus’ prayer for unity that need not require uniformity.
