In Episode 233, we explore Luke 13:10-17 and one of the most tender and confrontational healing stories in all of the Gospels. Jesus is teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath when He sees a woman who has been crippled by an evil spirit. She has been bent double for eighteen years—unable to stand straight, unable to look up, carrying this burden every single day in the synagogue, in the marketplace, in her home. Eighteen years of limitation. Eighteen years of pain. Eighteen years of being unable to lift her face toward the sky. Through guided meditation, discover the first and most significant thing that happens in this story: Jesus sees her. Not the synagogue leader. Not the crowd. Jesus. He doesn't wait for her to come to Him. He doesn't wait for her to ask. He sees her across the room and calls her over. He speaks directly to her—"Dear woman"—with a tenderness that names her as a person, not a problem. Not a case study. Not an interruption to His teaching. A person. A daughter of Abraham. Someone He knows and cares for. And He heals her. Instantly. Completely. And she stands up straight—for the first time in eighteen years—and praises God. But the synagogue leader's response is not amazement. It's not wonder. It's not gratitude on behalf of this woman who has suffered so long. It's indignation. Because it happened on the wrong day. He turns to the crowd—not even to Jesus—and lectures them about the six days available for healing. As if this woman's eighteen years of suffering should have waited one more day for the sake of a rule. As if the schedule is more important than the person. As if God should have checked the calendar before He acted. Jesus calls it exactly what it is: hypocrisy. You untie your animals on the Sabbath to give them water—you make exceptions for your livestock without a second thought. But this woman—a daughter of Abraham, bound by Satan for eighteen years—she should wait one more day? The synagogue leader had a system. A schedule. A carefully constructed set of rules that told him when God was allowed to work and how and through whom. And when God showed up outside those boundaries, he couldn't see the miracle for the rule violation. He was so focused on what shouldn't be happening that he completely missed what was. This episode explores the searching question this story raises for all of us: Are we doing the same thing? Have we built systems and expectations around how and when God is allowed to move—and then missed the miracle because it didn't fit our schedule, our method, our theological category, or our comfort zone? God doesn't ask permission. He doesn't check our calendar. He doesn't limit Himself to the methods we've approved or the timing we've planned. He shows up when He shows up. And the only question is whether we'll be open enough to receive what He's doing—or so locked into our expectations that we miss it entirely.
