In Episode 232, we explore Luke 13:1-9 and Jesus' urgent and tender call to repentance. The crowd comes to Jesus with a horrific story—Pilate has murdered Galileans while they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. And underneath their report is a very human, very understandable unspoken question: Did they deserve it? Were they worse sinners than everyone else? We want tragedy to make sense. We want it to be someone's fault—because if it's their fault, then we're safe. If they suffered because of their sin, then as long as we're not that sinful, we're protected. It's a logic that gives us the illusion of control over our own fate. Through guided meditation, discover how Jesus refuses that logic entirely and completely. "Not at all," He says. Those Galileans were not worse sinners than other Galileans. The eighteen who died when the tower of Siloam fell were not the worst sinners in Jerusalem. Tragedy is not a report card on someone's sin. Suffering is not always the direct result of specific wrongdoing. And the comfortable assumption that bad things only happen to bad people is a lie that Jesus will not allow to stand. But then Jesus does something unexpected and urgent. He uses these tragedies not to assign blame—but to issue a personal invitation to every person listening: "Unless you repent, you will perish too." He's not saying: they died because they were sinful. He's saying something far more searching: death is coming for all of us. The question isn't whether you'll face the end—it's whether you'll be ready when you do. And the only way to be ready is to repent—to genuinely turn from sin and turn to God—now, while there is still time. Then Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree. A man has planted a fig tree in his garden and has come again and again looking for fruit. Three years. Nothing. He's ready to cut it down—it's just taking up space. But the gardener intercedes with a request that should move every one of us: "Sir, give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I'll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer. If we get figs next year, fine. If not, then you can cut it down." That gardener is Jesus. And that extra year—that season of special attention, of fertilizer, of grace and tending and patience—is the time we're living in right now. God is patient. He is tending. He is giving us every opportunity to bear fruit. But the patience of God is not the absence of urgency. The tree that never bears fruit will eventually be cut down. The question is not whether God is patient—He is. The question is what we're doing with that patience. Are we bearing fruit? Or are we taking His patience for granted, assuming the extra year will stretch indefinitely?
