What happens when everything you thought was permanent burns away?
A marriage ends. A relationship disappears. An identity collapses. The future you planned no longer exists. And eventually, you are left standing in the ashes asking a question that is both terrifying and strangely hopeful:
What survives the fire?
In Episode 19 of Therapy Is Expensive So Here We Are, we continue our journey through divorce, grief, faith, and identity by exploring what suffering actually does to us.
We love to say that suffering "builds character."
But does it?
Or does suffering simply reveal the character that was already there?
Pain doesn't automatically make us wiser. Sometimes it makes us bitter. Sometimes it makes us cynical. Sometimes it makes us compassionate. Sometimes it strips away the version of ourselves we spent years constructing and forces us to confront who we actually are.
This episode goes straight into that tension.
We'll explore the psychological side of suffering, the identities we create to survive, and the uncomfortable ways crisis exposes our deepest beliefs, fears, coping mechanisms, and attachments. We'll talk about the things we mistake for strength, control, perfectionism, people-pleasing, achievement, and even religious performance, and what happens when life removes our ability to hide behind them.
From a faith perspective, we'll wrestle with the idea of the Refiner's Fire. Maybe the fire isn't always about destroying us. Maybe sometimes it reveals what was real and burns away what was never meant to survive.
And maybe that's where redemption begins.
This isn't an episode about pretending suffering was good.
Some things should never have happened.
Some losses should never have been necessary.
But if you've already walked through the fire, the question becomes:
Who are you going to be when you walk out?
Because healing isn't becoming the person you were before the fire.
It's discovering what remains when everything false has been burned away.
In this episode, we explore:
Divorce, grief, and emotional transformation
What suffering reveals about character
Identity and psychological resilience
Shadow work and confronting false identities
Faith during seasons of loss
The Refiner's Fire
Letting go of control, performance, and people-pleasing
Redemption after suffering
Becoming someone harder to shake
Sometimes the fire takes everything you thought you needed.
And sometimes...
what remains is you.
