Timothy Ray Jones Jr. was a South Carolina father who murdered his five children—Merah (8), Elias (7), Nahtahn (6), Gabriel (2), and Abigail (1)—in August 2014 in one of the most disturbing family homicide cases in recent U.S. history. Prosecutors said Jones killed the children at his home in Lexington County after becoming enraged and abusing them. He later admitted to killing all five children and transporting their bodies in his vehicle for several days before dumping them in a remote area of Alabama.
Jones was arrested after a traffic stop in Mississippi raised suspicions. During his trial, the defense argued that he suffered from severe mental illness and drug-induced psychosis, while prosecutors maintained that he understood his actions and took deliberate steps to conceal the crimes. In 2019, a jury convicted him on five counts of murder and sentenced him to death.
In 2023, the South Carolina Supreme Court upheld both his convictions and death sentence, rejecting his appeal. Jones remains on South Carolina's death row while additional appeals continue through the court system.
The case is often cited as one of the most horrific child-murder cases in South Carolina history due to the number of victims, the ages of the children, and Jones's efforts to conceal the crimes.
