Today’s episode traces the history of “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” a hymn created through the work of two nineteenth-century writers, Matthew Bridges and Godfrey Thring. Inspired by Revelation’s vision of Christ with many crowns, the hymn celebrates Jesus as the Lamb upon the throne, the Lord of love, and the Lord of life. At its heart is a dramatic reversal: the Jesus whose head was once crowned with thorns now wears the crowns of eternal victory.
“Crown Him!” transforms that historic hymn into an exuberant modern gospel proclamation. Lead vocalist and choir move through Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and eternal reign, repeatedly answering the story of Calvary with the declaration, “But He reigns!” The song builds through call-and-response worship, proclaiming Jesus King of kings, Lord of lords, Prince of Peace, Risen King, Lamb of God, and Lord of all, before culminating in the confession that He reigns forever.
The devotional challenges us to understand crowning Jesus as more than something we do in song. If Christ truly is Lord, His reign should be evident in our choices, priorities, relationships, and service to others. The episode therefore moves from heaven’s worship to personal surrender, inviting us to live each day as though Jesus truly is Lord of all.
