What looks like an unusual six-sided stagecoach inn in the small town of Milton, Wisconsin, holds one of the state's most remarkable stories. Built by pioneer Joseph Goodrich in 1844, the Milton House became much more than a stop for weary travelers. Guided by faith and a commitment to equality, Goodrich and his community quietly risked everything to aid freedom seekers escaping slavery.
In this inaugural episode of The American History Road Trip, host John Harry visits the Milton House Museum to uncover the history behind Wisconsin's only certified Underground Railroad site open to the public. Along the way, Executive Director Keighton Klos explains how religion, politics, and moral conviction transformed an ordinary frontier inn into an extraordinary place in American history.
