We were made in the image of God to reflect Him as His children. Sanctification is becoming more fully human as we put off the old self and look more like our Father, who is love—love made flesh in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:1-2 therefore calls us to be imitators of God as dear children and to walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself as an offering and sacrifice, a fragrant aroma to God.
This love is not abstract. God interprets it for us in the historical, flesh-and-blood life of Jesus. The sermon contrasts that true love with the false loves we substitute for it: lust that grasps and consumes rather than giving itself up; words and warm thoughts without action, service, or sacrifice; and empty duty that keeps the form of love while lacking heart, joy, and the Spirit. Christ shows us the real thing.
