Have you ever avoided doing something because you thought, “I’m just not that kind of person”?
Maybe you’ve told yourself:
“I’m not a public speaker.”
“I’m not creative.”
“I could never get up in front of people.”
“I’d probably embarrass myself.”
And after a while, those fears can start sounding like facts.
In this episode of Amazing Life Breakthrough, Steve Klein shares a personal story from his senior year of high school, when he unexpectedly ended up with one of the lead roles in the senior class play — even though he had never taken a drama class, had never acted in a school play, and struggled with reading out loud.
At first, the experience was uncomfortable. Reading the script cold in front of classmates was difficult, and Steve could feel the room’s confidence in him starting to drop.
But instead of quitting, he went home, rewrote the lines by hand, used visual cues, memorized the scene, accepted coaching, and came back prepared.
The result was not perfection.
The breakthrough was stepping forward.
This episode is for anyone holding back from an opportunity because they feel nervous, inexperienced, embarrassed, or afraid they won’t be good enough.
Because confidence does not always come before the first step.
Sometimes confidence comes after you begin.
In This Episode
- Why fear can disguise itself as a fact about who you are
- How Steve ended up with a lead role in his senior class play
- Why reading aloud was difficult and how he found another way through it
- How preparation can create confidence where confidence did not exist before
- Why confidence is often evidence you collect through action
- The importance of being coachable when stepping into something new
- How another person’s belief in you can help you see possibility in yourself
- Why preparation does not always remove fear, but can help you move through it
- How one courageous step can change the way you define yourself
Listener Challenge
Think of one thing you have been telling yourself you are “not the kind of person” to do.
Write the sentence down:
“I’m not somebody who ______.”
Then add one word:
Yet.
I’m not comfortable speaking in front of people… yet.
I’m not good at interviewing… yet.
I don’t know how to run a business… yet.
I’m not confident enough to take that class… yet.
Then identify one preparation step.
Not the whole journey.
Just one step.
Practice for twenty minutes.
Ask someone for coaching.
Learn the first skill.
Make one call.
Sign up for the class.
Put yourself in the room where growth can start.
Because confidence may not arrive before the opportunity.
Sometimes the opportunity is how confidence arrives.
If this episode encouraged you, share it with someone who may be holding themselves back because they don’t feel ready yet.
