In 2003, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles brought the Final Fantasy name back to a Nintendo console for the first time in nearly a decade, and it did so by way of one of the strangest corners of Square's history. In this episode, David and Rob trace how the box office failure of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within nearly sank the company, and how that crisis led Square to build a walled off subsidiary called the Game Designers Studio, backed by Nintendo's own development fund, just to quietly return to Nintendo hardware without disturbing its relationship with Sony. They dig into Akitoshi Kawazu, the SaGa creator put in charge of the project, and why his reputation for unconventional design explains everything from the missing job system to the game's central chalice mechanic. They also explore the reasoning behind one of gaming's most notorious hardware requirements, a Game Boy Advance and link cable for every player. Join David and Rob as they trace the corporate crisis and the strange design philosophy that built Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on today's trip down Memory Card Lane.
