A late-night knock and voices at Janine’s door send her dog barking — and leave her wondering whether anyone will believe what she heard. In this episode of the Nutty and Slutty podcast, Janine and Isadora explore how stigma can lead women to question their own experiences, even when their personal safety is at risk.
Janine opens up about living publicly with bipolar disorder and the fear that others will dismiss her as dramatic, unstable, or unreliable. She recalls being mugged at gunpoint, enduring two court hearings, and receiving victim-blaming responses that taught her to stay silent rather than risk not being believed.
Isadora connects Janine’s experience to her former life as an escort, when sex workers warned one another about dangerous clients because reporting rape or violence could lead to judgment, disbelief, or arrest. Together, they examine the damaging stereotypes surrounding mental illness and sex work — and what happens when marginalized women are treated as unreliable narrators of their own lives.
It’s a candid conversation about bipolar stigma, sex-worker safety, victim blaming, trauma, credibility, and learning to advocate for yourself. Sometimes asking for a better lock, a security light, or someone’s help is more than a practical act — it’s a way of reclaiming the belief that your voice, your body, and your safety matter.
