In August 1977, a quiet council house in Enfield, North London, became the center of one of the most controversial paranormal cases in history.
For nearly eighteen months, the Hodgson family reported violent poltergeist activity — furniture moving on its own, beds shaking, objects flying through the air, and a deep, guttural voice speaking through eleven-year-old Janet Hodgson.
Investigated extensively by members of the Society for Psychical Research, including Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair, the Enfield Poltergeist became one of the most documented hauntings ever recorded — and one of the most debated.
Was it a hoax fueled by fear and attention?
A genuine case of possession or poltergeist activity?
Or something far more complex than either explanation allows?
In this episode of Veil of Echoes, we trace the case from the first night of knocking in the walls, through months of escalating phenomena, to the disturbing voice that identified itself as Bill Wilkins — a man who had died in the house years earlier.
We examine the evidence, the hoax allegations, the medical impossibilities of the voice itself, and the chilling confirmation that came years later from Wilkins’ own son.
This is the story of The Enfield Poltergeist — and the voice that didn’t belong.
