He had freed them from their enemies and called them into a unique covenant with himself. He intended to dwell with them, to bring them to the very heights of being by sharing with them his own divine life. He was calling them to participate with him in the salvation of the world, such that all nations would be blessed in them. St. Paul speaks of these extraordinary privileges in his letter to the Romans: “They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed forever” (Romans 9:4–5). Because of the height of their call, much was demanded of them. They needed training in true greatness so that the mighty God could live among them and accomplish his saving deeds through them. Some were up for the task, men of magnanimity, of true greatness of soul. Among them was Moses, whom the scripture calls the meekest man on the face of the earth. Joshua was another who would linger in the sanctuary to satisfy his love for God’s presence. Phineas was a great soul whose zeal against idolatry would gain him favor with the Lord. And Caleb, brave and full of faith, was always ready to battle for the Promised Land. But the majority of the Israelites were overcome by pusillanimity, by smallness of soul. As a result, they grew discouraged. They desired ease and security rather than greatness. They allowed themselves to be captured by fear, and they regularly angered God by their incessant longing to return to their earlier slavery. READING 1 Thessalonians 4:1, 7My brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that, even as you learned from us to conduct yourselves in a way pleasing to God — which you are indeed doing — so you must learn to make still greater progress. God has not called us to immorality but to holiness.
