Ep. 07 | The Empty Space: What Do You Do When Someone You Love Isn’t There Anymore? What do you do when someone you love isn't around anymore?Maybe it was a breakup.Maybe your best friend left on a mission.Maybe a friendship changed.Maybe a parent walked away.Or maybe you've lost someone you love to death.Whatever the reason, sometimes someone leaves your life and you're left with something you didn't expect:An empty space. In this episode of Inspired by a Better Cause, Brother Richards tackles a question from a young man who asked:“Brother Richards, what do you do when God takes important people out of your life?”The answer isn't always simple.Sometimes we don't know why people leave. Sometimes relationships end because of agency. Sometimes people move. Sometimes friends go on missions. Sometimes families experience painful things we don't understand. And sometimes, someone we love dies. But one thing Brother Richards has learned is this:Not everything that fills the space heals the space. When we're hurting, it's easy to reach for distraction—our phones, video games, sports, dating, work, friends, or anything that keeps us from having to feel what's actually hurting. But distraction isn't the same thing as healing.Sometimes the pain we're trying so hard to avoid is exactly the pain we need to bring to Jesus Christ. This episode explores what it means to experience heartbreak, grief, loneliness, loss, and change while still holding onto faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.Brother Richards talks about:❤️ Why it's okay to miss someone you love📖 What Jesus Christ teaches us about grief and mourning💔 Finding your identity after a breakup👊 Why someone else's decision does not determine your worth👨‍👦 What to do when a parent leaves🕊️ How faith can help when someone you love dies🙏 How to bring your real feelings to Heavenly Father⚓ Why Jesus Christ is our foundation when life's storms hit🌱 How God can use our trials and afflictions for our growth🎯 How to move forward when someone you expected to walk beside you is no longer thereOne of the most powerful messages in this episode is simple:You don't have to pretend you're okay with God.You can kneel down and say:“Heavenly Father, I miss her.”“I'm angry.”“I don't understand.”“I feel alone.”“I thought things were going to be different.”“I need You.”That's prayer. You don't have to bring Heavenly Father a cleaned-up version of your pain. Invite Him into the empty space.Drawing from the Bible and Book of Mormon, including John 11, Mosiah 16, Helaman 5:12, and 2 Nephi 2:2, this episode points back to a powerful truth:Jesus Christ doesn't promise that nobody will leave. He doesn't promise that you won't experience heartbreak. He doesn't promise that your family will never have problems. He doesn't promise that nobody you love will die.He promises that when the storms come, they don't have to destroy you.Because of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection, death does not get the final word. And because of Him, your pain doesn't have to become your identity.Maybe you didn't get to choose the kind of father you had.But someday, you may get to choose the kind of father you become.Maybe someone walked away.Don't let their decision write the rest of your story.Maybe the person you loved was only meant to walk beside you for a season.Love them. Learn from them. Thank God for them. And when the road changes, don't stop walking.Jesus Christ is still there.THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGEThink of somebody you miss. Then do three things:1. Thank Heavenly Father for them.Tell Him why you're grateful they were—or still are—part of your life.2. Tell Him what hurts.Don't clean it up. Be honest.3. Ask Him:“Heavenly Father...who do You want me to become now?”Then listen.Don't immediately fill the empty space.Give Jesus Christ some room to work in it.This episode is for young men ages 12–18, Latter-day Saint youth, LDS youth, parents, Young Men leaders, and anyone experiencing heartbreak, grief, loneliness, family struggles, friendship changes, loss, or questions about why God allows difficult things to happen.Whether you're listening in Utah, across the United States, or anywhere in the world, remember:You are a son of God.Your worth is not determined by who stays.Your identity doesn't depend on who chooses you.And you are never walking alone. When there's an empty space...Invite Jesus Christ in.🎙️ Inspired by a Better Cause is a Christian podcast for young men focused on Jesus Christ, the Book of Mormon, faith, courage, identity, purpose, resilience, and becoming the men God needs us to be.📖 Scripture Focus: John 11:35; Mosiah 16:7–8; Helaman 5:12; 2 Nephi 2:2; Doctrine and Covenants 18:10🎯 Topics: grief, loss, heartbreak, breakups, loneliness, death, family struggles, absent parents, friendship, missionary service, Jesus Christ, Heavenly Father, prayer, faith, resilience, identity, self-worth, healing, Book of ...
