What if the spiritual battles we face are more real—and more subtle—than we realize? In Luke 4:1-13, Jesus enters the wilderness and confronts the enemy directly, giving us a picture of both Satan’s tactics and the way we are called to resist them. The enemy is not God’s equal, but a created spiritual being whose work is aimed at stealing, killing, destroying, and disrupting what God is doing in the world. His strategies are often less dramatic than we imagine: attacking our identity, exploiting disordered desires, twisting Scripture, and offering counterfeit versions of the good things God has made. That means spiritual warfare is not primarily about becoming fascinated with demons, but about becoming deeply formed in truth. Jesus shows us how to fight: feast on Scripture until we know it well enough to recognize a lie, pursue holiness and repentance instead of giving sin a foothold, pray and fast, and stay alert to the ideas and desires shaping us. And beneath all of it is the hope of the gospel: through the cross and resurrection, Jesus has already defeated the accusing power of the enemy. We do not fight hoping to achieve victory; we resist from the victory Christ has already won. Jesus is victorious over the enemy—and because we belong to him, we can walk in that victory too.
