Pfoe, wat een weer vandaag hè. Het ene moment zon, het andere moment regen.Hey Maarten! Phew, what weather today, huh? One moment sun, the next moment rain.Maarten: Ja, typisch Hollands weer. Ik moest vanochtend echt drie keer kijken wat ik aan zou trekken.Yeah, typical Dutch weather. This morning I really had to check three times what I was going to wear.Lisa: Precies! Het doet me denken aan de zomer van '23. Weet je nog? Die was pas echt extreem.Exactly! It reminds me of the summer of '23. Remember? That one was truly extreme.Maarten: Oh ja, die herinner ik me nog goed. Eerst die intense hittegolf.Oh yes, I remember that one well. First that intense heatwave.Lisa: Niet normaal! Ik woonde toen net in m'n nieuwe appartement in Utrecht, recht onder het dak. Ik dacht echt dat ik zou smelten. Zelfs 's nachts koelde het niet af.Insane! I had just moved into my new apartment in Utrecht then, right under the roof. I really thought I would melt. Even at night, it didn't cool down.Maarten: Ja precies, dat was zo'n periode van extreme droogte. De parken waren helemaal geel en de boeren klaagden steen en been.Yes, exactly, that was such a period of extreme drought. The parks were completely yellow and the farmers complained bitterly.Lisa: En dan, oh wacht, weet je nog wat er daarna kwam? Ineens die enorme hoeveelheid neerslag. M'n hele balkon stond blank!And then, oh wait, do you remember what came after that? Suddenly that enormous amount of rainfall. My whole balcony was flooded!Maarten: Dat is waar. Van het ene extreem naar het andere. Dat is eigenlijk een perfect voorbeeld van de gevolgen van klimaatverandering.That's true. From one extreme to another. That's actually a perfect example of the consequences of climate change.Lisa: Ja, dat zeggen ze hè. De zomers worden gewoon steeds heftiger. Ik snap nu wel waarom Nederlanders altijd, maar dan ook echt altijd, over het weer praten.Yeah, that's what they say, right? Summers are just getting more and more intense. I understand now why Dutch people always, but really always, talk about the weather.Maarten: Nou ja, het is voor ons ook meer dan alleen een gespreksstarter. Het heeft direct te maken met onze veiligheid.Well, it's more than just a conversation starter for us. It's directly related to our safety.Lisa: Je bedoelt met al dat water en de dijken en zo?You mean with all that water and the dikes and so on?Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Stel dat ons waterbeheer niet zo geavanceerd zou zijn, dan zou een groot deel van het land bij zware regenval direct onder water staan.Essentially, yes. If our water management weren't so advanced, a large part of the country would be immediately underwater during heavy rainfall.Lisa: Ja, dat is waar. Zeker in Rotterdam, waar ik vandaan kom, ben je je daar constant van bewust. Je leeft er letterlijk onder de zeespiegel.Yes, that's true. Especially in Rotterdam, where I'm from, you're constantly aware of that. You literally live below sea level there.Maarten: Precies. Mocht er ooit een belangrijke dijk doorbreken, dan zijn de gevolgen echt niet te overzien. De opwarming van de aarde maakt dat risico alleen maar groter.Exactly. Should an important dike ever break, the consequences would truly be unimaginable. Global warming only increases that risk.Lisa: Brr, eng idee. Ik zie wel steeds meer initiatieven. Overal zie je nu zonnepanelen op de daken liggen, dat is dan wel weer positief.Brr, scary thought. I do see more and more initiatives. Everywhere you now see solar panels on the roofs, that is positive.Maarten: Zeker, alle beetjes helpen. Maar het blijft een enorme uitdaging. De hele infrastructuur moet erop aangepast worden.Certainly, every little bit helps. But it remains a huge challenge. The entire infrastructure needs to be adapted to it.Lisa: Je zei net 'waterbeheer'. Dat is zo'n typisch Nederlands woord. En wie regelt dat eigenlijk allemaal?You just said 'water management'. That's such a typical Dutch word. And who actually arranges all that?Maarten: Nou, dat is een complexe taak die grotendeels bij de overheid en de waterschappen ligt.Well, that's a complex task that largely lies with the government and the water boards.Lisa: Oh ja, een waterschap. Wat is dat ook alweer precies? Ik hoor dat woord wel eens, maar...Oh yes, a water board. What exactly is that again? I hear that word sometimes, but......
