In this episode, I pull back the curtain on a recent TikTok comment challenging my debt-free lifestyle with the classic argument, "Be honest, nobody buys a car or house with cash". Well, I'm being completely honest: my wife and I do buy our cars with cash, and I dive into the exact discipline it took to make that happen—including the 3 to 6 months I spent taking the bus, walking, and hitching rides after wrecking my truck just to avoid a car loan. While the commenter was half right that we didn't buy our house with a massive lump sum of upfront cash, we didn't use a bank either; instead, we utilized a notarized, rent-to-own owner-finance agreement to pay it off completely in around 5 to 6 years. Inspired by a semi-modified version of Dave Ramsey's principles, I talk about going against the grain of normal society, navigating the critics who will always find something to say, and the immense mental freedom that comes from knowing a job layoff wouldn't cause a financial crisis because we don't owe a dime to anyone.
