The Shroud of Turin

In 1898, photographer Secondo Pia developed the first photograph of an ancient linen cloth—and nearly dropped the plate.

The faint figure on the Shroud of Turin had transformed into the detailed face of a wounded man.

Somehow, the cloth behaved like a photographic negative centuries before photography existed.

In Mythical Artifacts, Part 3, Lucy and Ellie investigate:

  • Was the image painted, scorched—or created by something else?
  • Why does it contain mysterious three-dimensional information?
  • Do its wounds reveal the victim’s identity?
  • Did carbon dating solve the mystery—or deepen it?
  • What happened between the body and the cloth?

Medieval masterpiece? Burial cloth of Jesus? Or the physical shadow of an event science cannot reconstruct?

The photograph revealed a face.

It did not reveal how the face got there.
