I thought I finally understood what happened after a hospital stay: you went home, or you went to rehab.

Then someone introduced me to an acute care hospital—a type of hospital I'd never even heard of.

So what exactly is an acute care hospital? How is it different from a regular hospital or rehabilitation facility? Who takes care of patients there? And why would an aging parent need one?

In this episode, I take you inside the next chapter of my mom's recovery after being hit by a car and surviving surgeries, AFib, aspiration pneumonia, a ventilator, and a long hospital stay.

But this chapter wasn't about survival anymore.

It was about recovery.

And recovery looks very different when you're caring for an aging parent who is bedridden, unable to put weight on a broken leg, and suddenly needs help with everyday things like eating, brushing her teeth, getting dressed, and using the bathroom.

You'll hear what I learned about acute care hospitals, the role of nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists, and why having a family member involved in a loved one's care can make such a difference.

You'll also hear about the frustrating—and sometimes surprisingly funny—process of helping Mom regain tiny pieces of her independence.

One night without the BiPAP.

Things most people might barely notice.
