When my mom was admitted to the hospital after being hit by a car, I made a decision that would weigh heavily on me for weeks.

I didn't give the hospital her Do Not Resuscitate order.

It wasn't because I didn't know her wishes.

I did.

It wasn't because I wasn't willing to honor them.

I was.

I believed this accident wasn't the situation she had envisioned when she made that decision. She had been living independently, staying active, and enjoying life. I believed she deserved every reasonable chance to recover.

Then, her cardiologist looked at me and quietly asked, "You know her wishes, don't you?"

That single question forced me to confront one of the hardest moments I've faced as a caregiver.

In this episode, I share the emotional weight behind that decision, the failed attempts to remove Mom from the ventilator, the exhausting uncertainty of ICU life, and the hidden meltdowns caregivers often experience when no one else is watching.

You'll also hear about:

  • Why "quiet" days in the hospital can be just as emotionally draining as the chaotic ones.
  • The difficult conversation with a respiratory therapist that introduced a two-week timeline I hadn't known existed.
  • How my husband caught a potentially serious medication error before it became another setback.
  • Why caregivers have to become advocates, question askers, and sometimes an extra set of eyes.
  • The tiny victories that kept us going when miracles seemed out of reach.
  • Why hope becomes one of the scariest emotions a caregiver can feel.

This episode isn't about whether a DNR is right or wrong.

It's about the impossible decisions caregivers make with the information they have at the time—and learning to live with those decisions afterward.

If you've ever questioned whether you made the right medical decision for someone you love, this episode is for you.
