In this episode of Yoga Is a Practice, Not a Performance, we take a deeper look at the role of music and sound in yoga. Does music help us calm the fluctuations of the mind—or can it become another distraction? We explore silence, savasana, the sounds of the yoga room, music and flow states, volume and hearing safety, and how studios can create space for both classes with music and without. Most importantly, we ask what happens when we move beyond the postures, the playlists, and the way yoga looks from the outside—and begin engaging with the deeper internal work of the practice. Grounded in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the idea of yoga as the calming of the fluctuations of the mind, this episode invites teachers and students alike to think critically about what we're putting into our practice—and why.
