Do We Recognize Ourselves?
“By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?” — Matthew 7:16
Our impulse to judge is strong.
When we hear this verse, many of us want to use it as permission —
to examine someone else’s life,
to evaluate their behavior,
to question their motives.
And yet only a few verses earlier,
the Gospel reminds us not to judge.
This teaching is not an invitation to police others.
It is a mirror.
Fruit reveals the nature of the tree.
So the question is not,
“What are they producing?”
The question is:
What is growing in us?
Are we producing patience or resentment?
Compassion or contempt?
Generosity or fear?
Are we who we say we are?
Are we becoming who we claim we aspire to be?
When we look at the fruit of our lives —
do we recognize ourselves?
