This is despite the fact that global rough diamond production has fallen from over 177 million carats in 2005 to under 120 million carats in 2022, lab-grown diamonds are now almost indistinguishable from real ones, and mining sites in places like Russia and Canada are largely depleted. This has, however, intensified rather than eased the fierce competition for global resources. Added to this are new scams involving the online sale of so-called diamonds.
