Patrick Walters shares an early setback: when he first applied to become a resident at the Toronto Public Library, his application was completely denied — limited spaces, and his qualifications hadn't met the requirements yet. He took it hard, because he thought he had it in the bag.

But it taught him a lot. The next year, he applied again and got in — and the reason he succeeded is that he spent the year in between increasing his CV, doing the work, and putting himself further out there to show he was worth being brought in. The rejection wasn't the end. It was the assignment.
