Join Em and Max on a special episode of mutually assured destruction! Max challenges Em ‘The Master’ to live up to her name by making up songs on the spot about the creatures of the deep, while Em challenges ‘Dr’ Max Bodmer to prove his credentials by providing three facts to accompany each of her songs. Does eating jellyfish really prevent you from being able to kiss your wife? Would you ever find a Bobbit worm in the Shire of Middle Earth? And what is the plural of ‘Portuguese Man o’ War’?

Deep Dive in and find out.

  • The Food Chain
    2026/02/11

The ocean is comprised of an intricate network of complex food chains which maintain ecosystem health. Is EM The Master’s song "The Food Chain" a radical oversimplification of one of the most complex phenomena on the planet, or, does she manage to capture the nuances of these life giving ecological systems in just 1 minute and 23 seconds?

Join Em and Max as they explore the fine line between artistic interpretation and the spreading of misinformation: What does a whale carcass have in common with a sphinx? How many jellyfish is too many jellyfish? What do you mean that a coral is animal, vegetable, and mineral?

  • The Sea Urchin
    2026/02/04

Sea urchins are the ecosystem engineers of most reef systems helping to keep them clean by removing algae. It may be our most scientifically accurate offering to date but does Max’s song - wait, Max's song?! - yes, you read that right! Does Max's song "Modern Echinoidea" actually communicate any of the amazing features of these incredibly important creatures, or, does his penchant for Latin and inability to rhyme mean that the listener is just left flummoxed?

Join Em and Max as they invert the format and Deep Dive into a world of song writing, metaphor, and wrong notes. Do sea urchins have regular facelifts? Does Em’s ability to rhyme mean she would be a better lecturer than Max? Can Max really claim to have written this song?

Deep Dive in and find out.

  • The Pufferfish
    2026/01/28

An inflated pufferfish may look like a useless evolutionary mistake but you’d be a fool to try and eat it. Em’s song "POISONOUS" is a public health warning in disguise but how well does she describe the amazing predator defence mechanisms of this wonderfully unassuming creature?

Join EM The Master and Dr Max Bodmer as they explore the fine line between artistic interpretation and the spreading of misinformation: Do pufferfish really survive off miso soup alone? Does Britney Spears really approve the take home message of this episode? Would Ariana Grande like to assert her right to reply?

  • The Shark
    2026/01/21

Sharks are as ancient as the dinosaurs but the human race seems to have forgotten how to respect its elders as they are one of the most persecuted species groups on the planet. EM The Master attempts to highlight the plight of this most maligned species through her song "Cold Blooded" but how good a job does she do?

Join Em and Dr Max Bodmer Max as they explore the fine line between artistic interpretation and the spreading of misinformation. Are sharks actually cold blooded or is the fundamental premise of Em’s song fatally flawed? Is the River Seine in Paris really shark infested? Has Max finally taken his pedantry one step too far?

Deep Dive in and find out.

  • The Mantis Shrimp
    2026/01/14

Mantis Shrimp may look beautiful on the outside but they are arguably the most unforgiving and voracious predators in the ocean. How well does EM The Master’s song Killer Shrimp convey the intricacies of their incredible biology and ecology?

Join Em and Dr Max Bodmer as they explore the fine line between artistic interpretation and the spreading of misinformation. Can a mantis shrimp really be used to x-ray broken bones? If you threw a cat really hard against a wall would it burst like a balloon or a pufferfish? How does that question even find its way into a podcast such as this? And will Em ever really get to the bottom of the meaning of the term ‘hexinocular vision’?

Deep Dive in and find out.

  • The Octopus
    2026/01/07

Octopuses are one of the most intelligent and biologically interesting creatures on the planet. Join performance artist EM The Master, as she presents her latest song, "Master Of Disguise", a musical ode to the octopus, to marine biologist Dr Max Bodmer. But how good a job does Em do of capturing the nuances of this extraordinary animal's existence? Deep Dive with Em & Max as they explore the fine line between artistic interpretation and scientific accuracy. Can octopuses really make themselves look like yachts? Is octopus blood blue because they’re cold or sad, or is there another explanation? And, are male octopuses so desperate to have children that they will willingly sacrifice an arm in the name of procreation?

We are thrilled to dedicate our first episode to the High Seas Treaty, a historic milestone for ocean protection and global cooperation. This moment shows what multilateralism can achieve. For the first time, the world will have the tools to create marine protected areas in the High Seas and ensure ocean resources are used fairly and sustainably. The Treaty will enter into force on January 17th, 2026, becoming international law and enabling the protection of two thirds of our oceans; almost 50% of our blue planet.

We'd like to congratulate the High Seas Alliance on this incredible achievement, which was of course helped by their mascot, Octavia the Octopus! We hope this episode will be a fitting tribute to Octavia, and this historic milestone for the oceans.
